Each stone is an entity of place, a physical embodiment of the primal forces of creation emanating while emanating a sense of groundedness. As a being whom has always questioned notions of belonging, I feel a sense of stability and acceptance within each one I touch. Like any interaction between two beings, there is an exchange and passing of energy and intention, and each sculpture’s surface bears marks which are evidence of our wordless conversation.
Recalling its lifecycle, both dynamic and serene, I mark, facet and expand upon its form according to this interaction: emphasizing the stone’s inherent personality and innate elegance. Some of these surfaces are then carefully anointed with treatments— gold leaf from Japan, indigo pigment from the Middle East, and ink from India— that further emphasize the stone’s individuality and presence. Each stone has its own will and pulse, and only through listening and observing can I honor its story.
