SANCTUARIES

ApR. 15-Oct. 2
Shangri La museum of islamic art, Culture & Design

Sanctuaries is a layered response to an extraordinary time and place, and the artwork in this exhibition arose from a 14-month artistic residency at the Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design. This unique, expanded time frame culminated in two exhibitions: In Stillness at the Honolulu Museum of Art and Sanctuaries at Shangri La.

The artwork created for Sanctuaries arose from my observations and contemplations on the materiality of the museum and surrounding landscape--from the collections and architecture, to the stones on the hillside and the ocean waves crashing below. Each of these aspects became conduits to a spiritual space that exists both within, and around me, and the resulting artwork animates a specific facet of these explorations.

These artworks feature a variety of materials, and employ mark-making techniques as a way to engage with the aliveness of the natural world, and explore my own cultural awakening and ancestral connections with Shangri La. You can read more about the residency and exhibition at Shangri La’s website.
